As part of the annual seminar held by the German group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Prof. Jan Bernd Nordemann will give insights into “The interplay between design and copyright protection for industrial products” on 27th April 2012 in Düsseldorf. This topic cluster is part of “Q231” of the working questions which the German group is processing for the AIPPI World Congress in Seoul (20th – 24th October 2012). Jan Nordemann is a member of the German group’s executive committee. On the international level, he is a member of the Programme Committee, as well as Chairman of the “Copyright” Special Committee. Prof J. B. Nordemann explains "European Copyright Law" in Los Angeles.The Los Angeles Copyright Society (LACS) dedicates its April meeting to "European Copyright Law - System, Directives, Cases". The meeting will not only discuss the structure of European copyright law, but also explain recent amendments to EU directives. “Copyright in the world of digital media”: Prof. J. B. Nordemann to chair symposium panel in Berlin.

EPO Specialist Convention with speech by Dr M. Engelhard.
On 8 December 2011, Forum MedTech Pharma e.V. in collaboration with the European Patent Office (EPO) held a Specialist Convention on "Solution Strategies for Patent Disputes". Patent disputes can be expensive and even threaten the very existence of small and medium-sized companies. Experts speaking at the Convention explained the legal aspects of patent disputes and the possibilities for solution. Finally, various prophylactic measures were presented. Franco-German Debate Series on "Freedom on the Web" with Prof Jan B. Nordemann.
On 29 November 2011, the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) will hold a "Franco-German Debate Series on Public Policy" on "Internet Regulation in the Digital Era". The debate will focus on freedom on the Internet and its limits. BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Prof Jan Bernd Nordemann will participate in the debate, as will Olivier Henrard, Member of the Conseil d'Etat, Advisor to the French President for Culture, Cultural Industries, Information Technology and Media and Stephan Urbach from the Pirate Party, Berlin.
The event is organised jointly by the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), the Institute français, Germany, and the Association of German ENA Graduates. The German Council for Foreign Relations (DGAP) is a national network for foreign policy which aims to encourage awareness of foreign relations in Germany. A seminar on "Patents in Biotechnology" will take place on 28 and 29 November in Amman, Jordan. The seminar is organised by the Agadir Technical Unit in collaboration with the European Patent Office. Dr Czychowski explains the "Creator Principle" at the University of Bayreuth.
"What remains of the creator principle in digitally creative networks?" - This question is addressed by BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr Christian Czychowski on 27 November 2011 in a lecture to be held at the University of Bayreuth. He will give a public lecture within the scope of the "Intellectual Property and Public Domain" event organised as part of the DFG Research Training Group initiative. Dr Czychowski to give BASE_camp lecture.
BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr Christian Czychowski will give a speech for the Friedrich Naumann Foundation on 24 November 2011 entitled "Nothing New on the Net - or is there?: Are there laws which can't be implemented? The right to information under § 101 Copyright Act (Urheberrechtsgesetz, UrhG). The speech, followed a discussion, will take place within the BASE-camp lecture series.
BASE_camp is an initiative launched by E-Plus Group and is an "open stage for impulses in the field of digital publishing, start-up culture, Internet policy and mobile living." It is conceived as an "analogue space for digital networks, a think-tank at the interface between industry, media, research and culture". Attorney Olaf Wolters to host the "DACH forum".
The 5th DACH forum "Responsibility on the Internet" will be held in Berlin from 22 to 23 November 2011. The forum is organised jointly by the German Federation Against Copyright Theft (GVU), the Austrian Anti-Piracy Association for Film and Video (VAP) and the Swiss Anti-Piracy Federation (SAFE). Olaf Wolters is a Berlin-based attorney and expert in digital media law, media regulation and Internet. It supports these organisations in pursuing copyright infringement by gathering and publishing knowledge and information about security technology, services and best practice. Combination seminar: “Copyright law” - with Prof. Dr. J. B. Nordemann and Dr. Ch. Czychowski
The German Lawyers Academy will be hosting two complementary seminars in Cologne on 11th and 12th November 2011. On 11th November Prof. Dr. Jan Bernd Nordemann will conduct a seminar entitled “Introduction to copyright law”. On 12th November Dr. Christian Czychowski and Prof. Dr. Nordemann will lead a study of “Legislation and jurisprudence” and shed light on current developments in copyright law. The two events will each last a day and will be held in Cologne this year.
Copyright law at German national and international level has undergone reform over recent years (“2nd Basket” and implementation of the EU Enforcement Directive). The “3rd Basket” is being discussed at present. Seminar participants will study individual issues that are of practical relevance and look at how recent cases illuminate principles of current copyright law. Both seminars are aimed at lawyers, publishing staff, music and film production companies, radio and television corporations, internet and software firms, advertising and design companies, associations and collection societies. The Federal Association of German Industry (BDI) will hold a Pre-Durban Conference in Berlin on 18 October 2011. The event will discuss the role of the economy in the UN technology mechanism and climate finance. The background to the Pre-Durban event is the next Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 17) set to take place in around three months in Durban, South Africa. With the event, the BDI intends to address the two core subjects of the international negotiation process: technology and financial cooperation. “Patents 2011”, the 13th congress of its type, will be hosted by Management Circle in Munich from 21st to 22nd March 2011. The congress will address current challenges in the field of IP management. "Round Table" of the UNION of European Practitioners for Intellectual Property in Munich.
The UNION of European Practitioners for Intellectual Property will host its annual Round Table on 25.02.2011 at the German Patent and Trademark Office in Munich. "Copyright law for Chambers for Trade and Industry" with Prof Jan B. Nordemann.
On 23 February 2011, a seminar will take place at the Chamber of Trade and Industry in Potsdam (IHK Potsdam) specially designed to meet the needs of chambers of trade and industry in relation to copyright law. It is aimed at staff at IHKs and is part of the series "Alles, was Recht is" (everything that's right (lit. law)) organised by DIHK-Bildungs-GmbH. The seminar will concentrate on practical issues of copyright law faced in the daily work undertaken by IHK staff. “Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse patent verwertet” – a series of seminars at Berlin universities.
In the winter semester of 2011 three departments in Berlin’s Freie, Humboldt and Technische Universities will co-host a series of seminars on the theme of patents and property rights targeting scientific teaching staff at Berlin institutes of further education. Underpinning the seminars is the fact that universities, too, will in future be under increasing pressure to profit commercially from their own research findings. The series will be hosted in partnership with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office and will be composed of blocks covering five themes. The block entitled “Special forms of property rights: Copyright” will be led by BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr. Thomas W. Boddien on 22nd February 2011 and will focus on copyright issues associated with the internet. On 8th March Prof. Dr. Jan Bernd Nordemann will lead the “Domain and trade mark law” seminar and address practical issues such as obstacles to be overcome in choosing a trade mark or domain. "IP Outsourcing done strategically" - Forum seminar with Dr K-D Langfinger.
On 14.12.2010, the Forum Institute for Management will host the seminar "Using Services for the Protection of Industrial Property Rights" in Frankfurt. The seminar will illustrate how companies can develop individual strategies to secure and exploit their intangible assets. It will also show when IP outsourcing makes more sense for companies than establishing their own specialist departments. On 17.11.2010, Austria Wirtschaftsservice (AWS) will host a workshop on the subject of "Contract Models in Technology Transfer" with further cooperation partners in Vienna. Seminar on Publishing Law with Dr Anke Nordemann-Schiffel.
A seminar will be held on publishing law on 13 November 2010 in Frankfurt. Introduction to Copyright Law – with Prof Jan Bernd Nordemann
The German Lawyers Academy (Deutsche Anwalt Akademie) will host a seminar to be given by Prof Jan Bernd Nordemann on 12 November 2010. The seminar will be held in Frankfurt and is entitled "Introduction to Copyright Law". Copyright law has been extensively reformed over recent years, both in Germany and at European level ("2nd basket" as well as the implementation of the EU Enforceability Directive). "Managing Patent Disputes" – Workshop with Dr K-D Langfinger in Ljubljana.
BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr Klaus Dieter LANGFINGER will hold a workshop together with Klaus Haft (Reimann Osterrieth Köhler Haft, ROHK, Düsseldorf) entitled "Managing Patent Disputes". The workshop will take place between 30 August and 1 September 2010 in Ljubljana. The first day of the workshop will look at patent management and patent exploitation. The exploitation of patents is becoming increasingly important for companies and Dr Langfinger will give a lecture on the exploitation procedure for large patent portfolios. The traditional BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT trademark seminar took place once again, this time on the 7th October in Munich. This year, partners Dr. Carl-Richard Haarmann, Dr. Ludwig Kouker, Dr. Volker Schmitz-Fohrmann and Dr. Martin Wirtz explained trademark-related issues regarding the ownership and structure of trademark portfolios in the corporation, the current jurisdiction questions and also the process of violation. At invitation of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT partner Dr.-Ing. Uwe Manasse will give a lecture at the AIPLA Spring Meeting in Boston, USA on 10 May 2007 on the subject „The MedImmune US Supreme Court decision and European implications“. The speech will centre on the US Supreme Court's decision of 21 February 2007, in which the Court held that a patent licensee (MedImmune) is not bound to terminate a license agreement (Genentech) before being able file an action for annulment of the licensed patent. The American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) brings together no less than 17,000 American legal professionals from industry, administration, and jurisdiction, all of whom professionally involved with patent, trademark and copyright issues. EPI Seminar on Copyright Contract Law
The first effects of the copyright contract law reforms are now being seen in practise, not least in respect of several first instance decisions on fair remuneration. The New Copyright Contract Law – The Road Ahead?
Since the new copyright contract law came into force, the German publishing landscape has been in disarray: the publishers were legally obligated to pay their authors “fair remuneration” for their works. The first court decisions based on this undefined term have now been made. For this reason, the Bِrsenverein des deutschen Buchhandels, together with the Akademie des Deutschen Buchhandels, is organising a workshop for those who work with this in practice in the Literaturhaus, Munich.
