Dipl.-Phys. Christian W. Appelt
German Patent Attorney, European Patent and Trade Mark Attorney, Munich
studied physics majoring in Solid State Physics (Dipl.-Phys., equivalent to MSc) at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany.
He has worked as a Patent Attorney at BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT since the start of 1995. Besides his professional career in Europe, he worked in Japan for two years for a patent law firm in Osaka, in the patent department of the Ebara Corporation and in the IP department of the Sony Corporation in Tokyo.
His professional work as a Patent Attorney particularly involves "technical" intellectual property rights, namely patents and utility models, both with respect to their registration and enforcement as well as litigation and licensing. Advising and representing his clients in opposition proceedings and nullity proceedings before the German authorities and courts, and before the EPA forms a further focus of his work. Christian W. Appelt also advises companies on setting up internal IP processes and departments.
Christian W. Appelt regularly teaches intellectual property law and has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences, Kiel, Germany since 2004, and at Tokai University in Tokyo, Japan since 2005. He also gives regular seminars on various aspects of intellectual property law, in particular for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Patent Organization (EPO), and the Association of German Engineers (VDI) etc.
Christian W. Appelt is a member of the GRUR and the Licensing Executives Society (LES), within which he is an International Delegate of the German National Committee and has been a member of the executive board since the start of 2010. He has also been Vice Chair of the LESI European Committee since 2004. In this role he is responsible for the contact and cooperation between LES and the European Patent Organization.
Together with Prof. Dr. Heinz Goddar, Christian W. Appelt wrote the “EPC Handbook - Guide for Practitioners”, the fourth edition of which was published in Japanese in 2012, and which has also been published in China, Taiwan, India and in Arabic.
Best Lawyers 2014 includes Christian W. Appelt as one of ten BOEHMERT & BOEHMERT lawyers on its list. The JUVE Handbuch 2013/2014 lists him as a highly recommended Patent Attorney.
